Alex Ferguson Pressurises Wayne Rooney

Rooney - Can he deliver?

With Ronaldo gone to Madrid and Tevez joining United`s rivals Manchester City, Alex Ferguson has put Wayne Rooney under pressure for next season by saying, “The expectation on Rooney is always high, it`s a natural situation as it is the standard which he has set for himself”.

Fergie is confident that Rooney will deliver and with Michael Owen, Gabriel Obertan and Antonio Valencia being signed this summer Ferguson considers his attacking options are complete.

The United manager stated earlier this week that “no more signings would take place this summer”, however a few days later that statement was contradicted by United`s Chief Executive David Gill who said, “there probably will be more” and indeed Gill was right, as United agreed to sign Senegalese striker Mame Biram Diouf from Norwegian club Molde.  Terms have been agreed and Diouf will have a medical in Manchester next week, although United may want him to stay at Molde on loan before joining the squad in January.

Ferguson revealed at a press conference in Malaysia where United are currently on tour, “We weren’t intending on signing anyone else after last week – we feel we have a full squad,” Ferguson said. “But the situation accelerated to a point where other clubs started to make bids, so we had to decide whether we acted or didn’t act. We decided to act and he’ll be the last person we sign.”

United start their pre-season Asian tour today with a friendly against a Malaysian XI in Kuala Lumpur.
